Night One Electric Zoo

Afrojack @ Electric Zoo, NYC Electric Zoo Main Stage

The experience was somewhat disappointing less because of the performances, and more so because of the strictly enforced rule restricting any flash photography from being taken. This certainly put a damper on the event for myself. However, my mood was brought back up to pace, upon being chauffeured  on a cool little golf cart  (the means of transportation for the DJs to the site of their performance).  Cinematographer, Jason Ano, managed to capture some cool hidden shots during the four minute ride,  while our director, Stephen Alex Vasquez, rode in with Afrojack himself!

We were all dropped off at the Red Bull music Academy tent, where Afrojack completely annihilated the set from the get go. The crowd certainly got their “satisfaction”, when he dropped his remix to the classic Benny track, which Benny himself played on the main stage later that night.  I literally though the tent was going to come crashing down over our heads at one point. I feared for the camera’s life. Yes, the camera was out for Afro’s set,  marking it as the only DJ footage we were able to obtain on the day.  Afro, himself, wanted the set recorded for his own personal use.  On a side note, Boris following Afro’s set was probably the biggest  miscasting since Topher Grace played Venom in Spiderman 3.

Other cool sets included Joachin Garraud, who actually rode into the show with us after we Interviewed  him outside of his hotel. (No, we didn’t try to steal any of our French buddy’s mixes). Diplo also delivered, representing one half of Major Lazer, joined not by Switch, but hype persona’s Skerrit Bwoy and Mimi, whom  helped strengthen an already strong set, with their onstage antics. Finally, “The Chemical Brothers” closed out night one, giving myself and the crew a nostalgia trip that more than just slapped us in the face, but sort of got us in an “Andre The Giant”  like headlock.  The set included a visual show that that made me wish a cigarette wasn’t the only thing I was smoking.
