Britney Spears brings Dubstep to US Mainstream Radio

If you’ve already heard Brittney Spears’ new single “Hold It Against Me” your ears must have felt privy to an edgier sound never heard before on mainstream radio. The track sent shock waves through the bodies of EDM music fans from the U.S. to Austraila, (making its way to the top of the charts in both places). The hit single includes a very surprising dub step bridge near the middle of the song. On the one hand, it was only a matter of time before the “dirty” basslines of dub step were “cleaned” up and modified for mainstream radio, however, the real shocker here is that Britney (or most likely her camp), were the first to take a shot at it.

Despite its success, Britney may find herself in some legal issues regarding the song. American pop and country music duo “The Bellamy Brothers” are claiming that Brit’s hit bares a striking resemblance to their 1979 mega hit, “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me.” The Britney line that’s in question here is, “if I said I want your body now, would you hold it against me?” We could obviously see where the Bellamy Brothers might see a resemblance, but is there really a case here?

The Brothers got wind of Britney’s version when their 1979 fossil suddenly shot up to 270,000 views overnight on Youtube. The brothers (Howard and David) released a statement saying that they feel completely ripped off professionally. Surprisingly, they haven’t made mention yet on whether they’ll be taking legal action, but considering the obscurity that the Bellamy Brothers are currently shrouded in, I would think they’ll milk this opportunity for all its worth.
