Why is Daft Punk not in the Electro Wars documentary?
There’s actually a very valid reason for Daft Punk’s absence in The Electro Wars documentary. It’s not like we forgot or anything. Psst… that would be blasphemous in some circles. Truth is we reached out to duo that revolutionized contemporary electronic dance music over a year ago, but to no surprise were denied the request. Not surprising given that Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have always shied away from any type of interview or media request. Had we succeeded in our quest we would have been the first to successfuly interview the duo on camera. But all was not for naught.
In our hot pursuit we ended up gaining more than we lost. You see folks, it turns out that DP’s manager is one of the most down to earth cats you’ll ever meet (and no its not Pedro Winter). And rightfully so, he is managing the greatest Electronic producers of our generation. Dude has every right to be calm and collected, not much to fret when you’re on top of the mountain. Or is there?
Carmine and I met ______ in small coffee shop in San Bernadino, we were greeted by a slick looking cat who immediately embraced us as if we were longtime friends. I had been emailing ______ for quite some time and he actually took the time out of his hectic schedule to sit down and explain why Daft Punk could not participate in the flick. I wasn’t expecting a fully disclosed conversation on demystifying the cryptic phenomenon that is Daft Punk, but that is exactly what he gave us. The conversation lasted over two hours and it ventured into all uncharted territories, nothing was safe. What we gained was far more than we could imagine, the conversation was mind blowing. Topics ranging from film, the mislabeling of Electro as a genre, the metaphysical, to the logic behind participating in Dj Hero. Everything suddenly became clear. There was also a sense of self discovery for us as filmmakers as well. I started to realize that their particpation was really not necessary, shit it would be sacrilegious.
The core essence of Daft Punk is too convoluted to sum up into a few questions, their brand is beyond the scope of anything a documentary film can cover. And no, I’m not making any excuses for their absence, but I now understand the rationale behind the rejection. A blog post will never do that day justice, but it should quell some of your questions.
