Skrillex DJ’s MTVU Woodie Awards

MtvU is a division of Viacom’s MTV network, which produces a twenty four hour television channel that is obviously targeting college students. The channel, which went public in February 2002, is accessible on more than 750 college and university campuses across the U.S. This past Wednesday (3/16/11), the sixth annual MtvU Woodie awards were held in Austin, Texas. The Woodies pride themselves on being the only awards show that honors lesser known artists, who are nominated and voted for by college students. Wiz Khalifa, Matt & Kim, Two Door Cinema Club, and Chiddy Bang were all winners on that night. What we found most interesting/appealing, however, was the appearance of our friend, Sonny Moore, better known as Skrillex, dj’ing the Woodies!

As we’ve mentioned in earlier posts, we have the privilege of working with Skrillex, professionally, for an upcoming documentary chronicling his rise in the EDM world. We were there for his New York City debut at Gramercy, (which was also our first encounter with him) and we’ll never forget when he came up to us after he spun, expressing genuine concern about whether the crowd was enjoying his set. We assured the humble twenty three year old that he killed it, and it seemed to put him at ease. The truth of the matter is, that Skrillex certainly did kill it that night, as he does every time he steps on stage. Remember, the show was on September 23rd of last year, prior to Skrillex’s rise to the top of the Beatport charts. Skrillex was a bit ouf of place with the crowd, primarily there for Atari Teenage riot, a German digital hardcore group, and the night was reminiscent to the Back to the Future scene where Marty McFly played Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” to a 1950′s prom night crowd.

It would be an understatement of enormous proportions to say that a lot has changed in the past six months. Skrillex most certainly does not need any assurance from us, (or anyone), to know that crowds around the world are raging to his sets. Needless to say, it was extremely rewarding for us, being at that first NY show, getting to know Sonny on a personal level, and now seeing him come as far as djing an awards show for MTV. It was like the circle that started forming at Gramercy six months ago, finally became full, on Wednesday night.
