Skrillex, Tommy Lee DJ Aero, Porter Robinson Project Blue Book Tour Webster Hall 2/25/11
PORTER ROBINSON
Tommy Lee wasn’t the only one opening up for Skrillex on Friday Night. Eighteen Year old prodigy DJ Porter Robinson was also on hand. The North Carolina Native saw his song “Say My Name” reach number one on Beatport’s Electro-House chart before the young tyke had even been to a real club; let alone finished high school! Porter is known for mashing up different genres (electro, dubstep, trance) and turning them into his own unique creation. He has already garnered the attention and support of legendary DJs such as Tiesto, David Guetta, Armand Van Helden, and Paul Van Dyk to name a few. In addition to his current tour with Skrillex and Tommy Lee, Porter has already performed alongside Moby, Tiesto, Afrojack, Bart B More, Dada Life and Felguk. On top of all that, DJ support for Porter’s music is coming in from such giants as Tiesto, David Guetta, The Crystal Method, Paul van Dyk, Rob Swire (Pendulum), and Armand Van Helden.

TOMMY LEE & DJ AERO
When most people hear Tommy Lee’s name, they think of his legendary rock group Motley Crue; the band he not only drummed for, but also founded. It was, however, his formation of the band “Methods of Mayhem” in 1999 (capitalizing off the popularity of Nu metal at the time) that helped contribute to his latest endeavors in DJing. The “Methods of Mayhem” project was where Lee first started mixing different sounds (such as techno, rock, and industrial metal) to form a hybrid. It was during this period that he drew the inspiration to dabble within the electronic dance music scene.
Joining forces with fellow band member DJ Aero in 2000, they developed a DJ partnership known as Electro Mayhem. In 2004, they played the main stage at Ultra for the Winter Music Conference. Lee cites Aero and DJ Mix Master Mike (the Beastie Boys’ DJ) as two people he drew inspiration from, when first coming on the DJ scene.
We had the pleasure of checking out Tommy Lee and DJ Aero’s set this past Friday at Webster Hall, as they opened up for Skrillex. Lee’s singer/girlfriend Sofia Toufa (Sofi) helped open up the set, singing some of her Deadmau5 collaborations, including “ Sofi Needs A Ladder” and “One Trick Pony”. Lee surprised us with his selection of Drum and Bass, including Sub Focus’ “Could This Be Real”. Other standouts from Lee’s set included Bloody Beetroots Warp 1.9 and Bart B. More (Brap).

SKRILLEX
It had been nearly three months since we last saw Sonny Moore (Skrillex) in Baltimore, Maryland. We kicked it at his hotel and reminisced for a bit. Because of Sonny’s rapid ascension into the EDM scene every month that goes by feels like three. We can’t begin to describe how elated we were when we returned with Sonny to Webster Hall. He’s come a long way since Skrillex’s NYC debut at Grammercy Theater, spinning on a bar stool, getting booed by nonbelievers. What can we say about Skrillex that hasn’t already been said by virtually every dance music blog? Rather than rehash trite descriptions on Sonny’s sound and brand, we’re going to cop out by copying and pasting his bio.
For fans of Moore’s past incarnation as the lead singer of hardcore band From First To Last, the bass bin crushing dance floor beats of SKRILLEX might come off as something of a shock. But SKRILLEX is part of a new generation of artists that refuse to be restricted by preconceived notions or outside expectations. “Genre has never been important to me,” he insists. “I’ve never thought about music that way.”
Describing his current sound as “a mix of dubstep, electro and glitch all thrown together,” new SKRILLEX release “SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES” reflects all of the above and beyond. The uplifting post-trance synth melodies of “ALL I ASK OF YOU” (featuring the soaring vocals of Penny) stands in stark contrast to the face-melting electro bass blasts of the massive electro-dubstep hybrid “ROCK N’ ROLL (WILL TAKE YOU TO THE MOUNTAIN).”
“I’ve listened to so much music for so long, it’s more about instinct than influence,” Moore explains about his sonic inspirations. “Coming up, I was into a lot of artists on the Warp record label like Autechre, Squarepusher, and Aphex Twin, so SKRILLEX tracks are inclined to have more changes than most dance tracks normally have. I can draw influences from almost anything. I just like to mess around and create cool new sounds and noises. I just go where the music takes me.”
After just one hugely successful independent release, “SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES” is the first SKRILLEX release on Big Beat Records, in conjunction with fellow electronic revolutionary Deadmau5′s freshly minted Mau5trap record label.
