Datsik ft. Smash Gordon at the Highline Ballroom
Friday, April 22nd: the line was practically a block long in length, girls in neon headbands, wayfarers, and short shorts… I knew I had finally made it to the Highline Ballroom. After linking up with Carmine, Jason, Datsik, Smash Gordon, Dieselboy and a few others, we quickly scurried into the side entrance before any fans were able to acknowledge what was going on. As Jason, Carmine and Datsik approached the venue, I witnessed a group of girls asked if they were going to see Datsik, in which Troy (Datsik) light-heartily replied, “Who’s that?”
We had made it backstage with ease and once introductions were done and everyone had a beer in hand, I approached Troy and questioned him about his upcoming releases on Rottun Recordings (Excision’s label). He told me to expect “Domino” and “Rough Rider” in the near future. As I made my way downstairs to the stage, I found Smash Gordon behind the CDJ’s. The only way to describe Smash’s set is a hodgepodge of Dubstep and Drumstep, which had the crowd going bonkers. He played a personal favorite of mine… Skrillex’s remix of Benny Benassi’s “Cinema” and closed with DJ Kahled’s new anthem, “Welcome to My Hood”.
As Smashed walked off and Datsik came on, I had this gut feeling that things were about to get hectic. Sure enough, I was right. His track selections formed a mosh pit in the center of the floor, where most of the crowd was shirtless, exchanging sweat, and just all out raging. His mash up of ”Woo Boost” and “Nuke ‘Em” had the entire venue bobbing their heads and waving their hands, in an almost synchronized manner.
He ended his set with his remix of MGMT’s “Kids” which was melodic enough to give everyone a break from moshing, but pumped out enough bass to keep everyone dancing in slow motion. Overall, another great, but still rare, night of heavy dubstep in New York City.
