rapper’s struggle to connect with today’s youth, and find

his core audience. It seems like rejection and criticism

greet Nine2Five at every corner; including potshots from his

own producer, played masterfully by the director/writer Stephen

Alex Vasquez. The tone of the film, dictated by Nine2Five’s

lyrics, gradually shifts to the dark side, as the rejection and

criticism for his music grows stronger. We, as an

audience, are basically baring witness to Nine2five’s inevitable

mental breakdown, as he strikes back at the very audience that’s

shunned him: Today’s youth.

Here’s a little Q & A I did with the man behind the lens.

Where did the concept for the video derive from?

Jason Ano: Stephen, Carmine, Danny (12th Planet’s Manager) and I were all hanging out at the Compound in downtown LA one day and on a random whim, we decided to come up with an idea for a music video. Stephen started off with an idea of a TV trying to establish communication and we all started brainstorming and shooting off ideas. A week later, Carmine and I flew back to NY and shot the video.

Who is the bearded protagonist?

JA: The bearded protagonist is Casey McBride, who’s an all-around awesome dude and is also part of the Hogslop String Band. I met him on the Mothership Tour with Skrillex and 12th Planet.

How do you feel about the end result for this video compared to “Purple Swag” or “Rock n Roll”?

JA: This video was definitely a bit different from the others. We had more creative control and were able to do something abstract over the course of two days. Purple Swag and Rock N Roll were all basically shot free flowing/organically in style.

There were some free flowing moments in this video. For instance – Casey: “I wanna climb this bridge”.. Me:”Do you see any cops?” Carmine:”Yeaaaah go for it”.

How long was production?

JA: We shot the video in just under two days. By far, it was the smoothest production I’ve ever been a part of. Everything just went our way, from scheduling to location and it even started to rain on the last day of the shoot, which was perfect for the ominous ending.

What locations where you scouting out for the shoot?

JA: We were looking for unique places around NYC to shoot, while trying to steer clear from places typical to the NY aesthetic. We shot around Tompkins Square Park in the East Village, an abandoned factory with an art installation in Bushwick, Brooklyn, an outdoor anitque shop on Houston Street in the East Village, on the Williamsburg Bridge and we finally ended up in some random woods on the side of a highway in Queens.

What’s next for Jason Ano and the team at One & Only Productions?

JA: Next on my plate is a short film involving a heist and possibly another hip hop video. Stay tuned!

Yeah, ya know, those 20 second clips with that same piano melody playing in the background.

But of course Dillon puts his own spin on it, this promo for his upcoming EP has Vasquez and Francis humor all over it.

I’m speechless, heart-broken, I don’t know what to think. DJ Mehdi: French, Underground Hip-Hop, Fafi, Riton, Dancing, Smiling, Ideal J. Thank you for not being afraid to cross genres, who can forget the first time they heard ‘Pocket Piano’? His ‘Dear Summer’ mix was the soundtrack to my four-day cruise last year. Always pushing boundaries, and one of the most technical DJ’s there ever was. You’ve never seen someone smile as much as Mehdi did. It was hard for me to listen to ‘Signatune’ or his remix of Santogold’s ‘Lights Out’ without tearing this morning. I first witnessed him DJ’ing in 2009. I’m so grateful that I had the chance to meet him last weekend, such a lovable and influential person. He really was somebody, a lucky boy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Fafi, his family, and the Ed Banger crew.
