Probably one of the smoothest shoots we’ve ever done, the music video for 12th Planet and Flinch’s “The End is Near Pt.1″ was just premiered on Spin yesterday evening. A huge thank you to Jason Ano for allowing me to be a part of this project, and to everyone who was involved for their help and performance.

Here’s a little Q & A I did with the man behind the lens.

Where did the concept for the video derive from?

Jason Ano: Stephen, Carmine, Danny (12th Planet’s Manager) and I were all hanging out at the Compound in downtown LA one day and on a random whim, we decided to come up with an idea for a music video. Stephen started off with an idea of a TV trying to establish communication and we all started brainstorming and shooting off ideas. A week later, Carmine and I flew back to NY and shot the video.

Who is the bearded protagonist?

JA: The bearded protagonist is Casey McBride, who’s an all-around awesome dude and is also part of the Hogslop String Band. I met him on the Mothership Tour with Skrillex and 12th Planet.

How do you feel about the end result for this video compared to “Purple Swag” or “Rock n Roll”?

JA: This video was definitely a bit different from the others. We had more creative control and were able to do something abstract over the course of two days. Purple Swag and Rock N Roll were all basically shot free flowing/organically in style.

There were some free flowing moments in this video. For instance – Casey: “I wanna climb this bridge”.. Me:”Do you see any cops?” Carmine:”Yeaaaah go for it”.

How long was production?

JA: We shot the video in just under two days. By far, it was the smoothest production I’ve ever been a part of. Everything just went our way, from scheduling to location and it even started to rain on the last day of the shoot, which was perfect for the ominous ending.

What locations where you scouting out for the shoot?

JA: We were looking for unique places around NYC to shoot, while trying to steer clear from places typical to the NY aesthetic. We shot around Tompkins Square Park in the East Village, an abandoned factory with an art installation in Bushwick, Brooklyn, an outdoor anitque shop on Houston Street in the East Village, on the Williamsburg Bridge and we finally ended up in some random woods on the side of a highway in Queens.

What’s next for Jason Ano and the team at One & Only Productions?

JA: Next on my plate is a short film involving a heist and possibly another hip hop video. Stay tuned!

Directed by: Jason Ano

Starring: Casey Mcbride, Carmine Rizzo, Charles Nuttall, Brandon Weems, Nelson Rocha, and Mr. Rizzo (Carmine’s Dad).

Thanks to Craig-Robins Handfield and Carlito Gonzalez for their help and support, and Scion A/V for making this possible.

Why do we love Dillon Francis?

Why do you love your PB & J’s with no crust?

I’ll tell you why we love Dillon

I’ll tell you why:

because

he’s white,

he produces that good sh*t,

his DJ sets are known for giving white girls

RHYTHM.

Our very own Stephen Vasquez is working on a parody with him.

The goal is to make a parody of the old school NBC “The More You Know” PSA’s.

Yeah, ya know, those 20 second clips with that same piano melody playing in the background.

But of course Dillon puts his own spin on it, this promo for his upcoming EP has Vasquez and Francis humor all over it.

IDGAFOS is out NOW.

I’m speechless, heart-broken, I don’t know what to think. DJ Mehdi: French, Underground Hip-Hop, Fafi, Riton, Dancing, Smiling, Ideal J. Thank you for not being afraid to cross genres, who can forget the first time they heard ‘Pocket Piano’? His ‘Dear Summer’ mix was the soundtrack to my four-day cruise last year. Always pushing boundaries, and one of the most technical DJ’s there ever was. You’ve never seen someone smile as much as Mehdi did. It was hard for me to listen to ‘Signatune’ or his remix of Santogold’s ‘Lights Out’ without tearing this morning. I first witnessed him DJ’ing in 2009. I’m so grateful that I had the chance to meet him last weekend, such a lovable and influential person. He really was somebody, a lucky boy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Fafi, his family, and the Ed Banger crew.

Watch Jason’s recap featuring appearances by Afrojack, Porter Robinson, Skrillex, David Guetta, Alvin Risk, The Bloody Beetroots Deathcrew 77 and Boys Noize.

Friday: Day one was interesting, we arrived just in time to catch Busy P’s set, and needless to say, we were taken by surprise. In a tent that holds 1000+ people easily, only about 200 were in attendance for Busy P. Yes, Daft Punk’s former manager, head of Ed Banger Records, the guy that put Justice on the map, the king of 2007, was playing for a crowd of 200, mid-day, at a festival. It was a depressing sight, even as he was dropping some unreleased Justice and Mr. Ozio tracks, there were only about 50 people dancing. To make matters worse, the festival staff had his sound turned down a little too low. Pedro played “Beat for the Douches” by Mr. Oizo, “Hatred” by Gesaffelstein, “Limit to Your Love” by James Blake, and even Para One’s remix of “Audio, Video, Disco”, needless to say, I was jumping like a mad man.

SebastiAn debuted his live show right after and everyone went static. I had been dying to see SebastiAn play, since I first heard “Greel” in 2009. The live show consisted of SebastiAn standing on a black podium, almost like what politicians would stand on to deliver speeches. The visuals had his personality all over it – gruesome clips of people getting their heads slammed by car doors, propaganda-like clips of SebastiAn talking to the crowd, all while being fueled by heavy kick drums and his infamous chain smoking (two packs per set?).

We then trooped over to the Hilltop Arena for MSTRKRFT’s set. I never thought I would hear myself say this, but I was thoroughly disappointed. It just didn’t feel like MSTRKRFT. If their name wasn’t in big shiny LCD lights, I would have thought I was listening to some resident DJ from Pacha. I don’t recall hearing even one track from their 2007 album “The Looks”. But I will always love MSTRKRFT, they’re the reason I fell in love with distorted sounds. Next up was my favorite set of the day, the Italian duo that helped me enjoy a Kid Cudi songs: Crookers. It was a nice mix of tracks from their side project with Savage Skulls, “Dr. Gonzo”, and the Electro House that they are known for.

Saturday: Even though our wristbands granted us limited access, we managed to schweef our way through. Saturday was probably the most interesting day. Our buddy, Skrillex, was playing along with Tommy Lee and DJ Aero. We had a chance to see a nice handful of good people such as Dave Taylor, Alex English, Alvin Risk, Porter Robinson, Vacay Vitamins and a flock of others. Tommy Lee and DJ Aero played a changeover set while The Bloody Beetroots were setting up their live show. During the set, their track “Static” was played, along with a clip of the video we did. We closed out our night with The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77, and all I have to say is, I’ve never danced so hard in my life.

Sunday: For some reason we had way more access on the third day, our media bands allowed us backstage on Sunday, but on Saturday, we couldn’t even get passed the barricade. We arrived later than usual, but just in time. Excision and Datsik had started their set, with Smash Gordon on the mic of course. While Stephen was filming, we were dancing. I was fortunate enough to see Carte Blanche before they went on directly after, and sly enough to get a picture with DJ Mehdi. I may have scared him a bit though, I told him I loved him at least three times during our conversation. Afterwards, we all decided to take the backstage route and head over to Calvin Harris at the Main Stage. Carte Blanche had me jackin’. Fake Blood made me all jittery when I heard the intro to “Mars” and Diplo played Moombahton – wow.

I was lucky enough to meet my hero for the second time this year, Alex “Boys Noize” Ridha. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone that has accomplished so much, and act so humble (other than Skrillex of course). It was nice to see that he still remembered us, as I was baffled that he approached Jason and I. I’m not going to say that I enjoyed his set because that would be stating the obvious. Our day finished with Armin Van Burren in the distance… yes, he had fireworks to close the show.
