For anyone who wants to move to Southampton University, one of the best things you can do is handle accommodation prior to moving here. You have many accommodation options waiting for you in the city: what is right for you?

Renting a flat/house

You could look to rent a flat or a home with some other students. Many will choose to do this, but it does mean hunting down a specific kind of accommodation. You will also find that most of the landlords won’t be too forgiving with things like late rent or other financial issues, so even one student falling behind could put the whole house at risk.

It’s not the best idea for a lot of students. The prices are often very high, and you can find that the level of support that you can all get is simply not going to be enough. On top of that, the living arrangements are often far more crammed than you would want. This can vastly reduce your chances of enjoying your time at University, and will make the cost of living more than it has to be for a young student.

Live outside of the city

While living in Southampton can be a touch pricy, some choose to go to the University here via travelling in from smaller towns nearby. The transport networks in and out of the city are quite good, so it does make sense to consider doing that if staying in the city is going to be too much for you financially. However, can you really afford to do this?

It means always being super-precise with everything from transit times to getting home post-lesson. Also, remember that unless you cycle into the city every day you are going to be spending a lot of money on public transport forward and back. That will probably end up costing you as much as any of the savings that you have made by living outside of the city in the first place!

Student accommodation

The best option, then, is to take a look at some of the various student accommodation options waiting for you in the city. This is a city that does a fine job of making sure you can pick up good quality student accommodation at a fraction of the price you would pay for standard living accommodation. Most of these living areas are based in walking distance of both the University and major amenities, making it cheap to get around.

You will also find that you can make use of various facilities onsite, such as staff, security, and services as well as recreation rooms. For that reason, many people will choose to invest in student accommodation and enjoy the student life this way instead.

While not perfect for everyone, it will be the ideal choice for many students who cannot afford to live in the city or in normal accommodation. Pick the right place, anyway, and you will find that student accommodation in Southampton often trumps having your own flat/home!
